How did you learn about makeup?

This is sort of kid related.. I was raised by my grandmother so I never learned about makeup from her, it was later in life that I even gave it much thought and learned on my own.

I notice a lot of little girls follow in their mom's footsteps though.. like I don't generally wear much makeup or bright polish (french manicures or natural colors), so my DD doesn't show much interest in that stuff.  But then moms who spend more time doing that, they seem to be the ones telling me their DDs are begging to wear makeup or polish.  

So I'm just curious, how did you learn about makeup?  Your mom?  Your friends?  Makeup counter?  Etc.  And by learn I mean beyond applying mascara or lipstick.. like layers of makeup, eyeshadow techniques, etc.
