Thanks for all the tips ladies, they're greatly appreciated.

I will start with flannel, per the advice, because it's so cheap (thanks for the heads-up about Joanne's, Flyer23!), but now my question is what should all the layers be so that it's absorbent while being cheap? I was thinking flannel outer, hidden layer pad of fleece (like 3 layers for a NB) and then a velour inner? Or should I just stick to flannel for the whole thing and make an insert with my fleece and not sew it in?

I love the cheap fabric idea when it comes to me inevitably screwing something up on the pattern, but I also need something that's workable/wearable. Thoughts on layering?
