BG elementals question

I bought two used elementals and they seem to be in pretty good shape but I have a few questions since I have never owned a new one.

The inner is stiff; I'm assuming this is what everyone calls "crunchy."  If I can't use ecover on PUL, how do I make this softer?  I really really prefer to line dry.  I want to like natural fibers but these are just not soft. 

Also, the leg elastic feels hard inside of the casing.  Does this mean it needs to be replaced?  It's still a little stretchy but does seem relaxed.

I should have just bought a new elemental!  These ones are not making me fall in love.
