Confused about building stash....

So as a soon to be first time mom and CDer, I'm a little confused about building up a good stash. I'd like to do it ahead of time to spread out the initial investment costs over the months of pregnancy, but from what I've read it's hard to build a stash until " you try a bunch of different kinds and see what works for you." Also, for moms who've waited to build their stash based on what you like/works for you and your baby, what do you do in the beginning? Have a bunch of disposables on hand since you haven't built a stash enough to diaper a newborn the whole time? Sorry if this seems silly. I'm looking to build a stash for twins so I know I'll need double the diapers which is why I wanted to get a head start if possible. Any tips or advice is appreciated!
