Thank you note ?

My shower isn't for over a week and we just received a gift in the mail (shipped to us directly from Target). Didn't open the box yet but the packing slip on the outside says what it is and who it is from. Is this one of those "do not open til X-mas" things, with the shower date being like Christmas, or is it ok to open it and send a thank you note right away even though the shower hasn't happened yet? The people it came from did not RSVP yet, and since they had a gift shipped, I assume they're not coming. Thanks!
