Kelty versus Beco/Ergo?

If I take DS on a long hike in the Beco my back gets sweaty and the Kelty is good for keeping baby off my back. But every time I try him in the Kelty, it just feels like I'm off balance, and for steep & rocky terrain it just doesn't seem as secure as keeping him closer to my center of gravity! I thought it was a good backpack (Kelty Kids Pathfinder) so maybe I'm just not giving it a chance? I'm just wondering what other people do...when do you decide to use the backpack versus a carrier like the Ergo or Beco? Does it depend on the length of your hike or on the terrain?
