"Second hand items"

I have a friend who is getting rid of some of her baby stuff, and included is a ring sling. I've had my eye on one since learning about baby wearing, so I'm very interested!

My question is, is this an item that's ok to buy second hand? I know it sounds silly, but I've heard there as some things that you just need to buy new.
