down syndrome screening?

My ob asked my dh and i if we wanted to do the down syndrome ultrasound and i said yes and hubby said no. So we scheduled n are trying to decide. In your expierence did you do it and was it covered in your insurance? What exactly do they do and is it done at the ob?
