Cold meds

I love in Florida, where unfortunately we have no fall and we go straight from blazing hot to freezing (well to a floridian, it's freezing) cold. This usually gets my immune system all out of sorts which I can already feel coming on. I am having a slight cough, but I feel it most in my chest when I cough. Are there any OTC meds that are safe to take that maybe those of you further along have asked your doc about already? What about cough drops? I would call and ask, but I seriously feel like I am calling them way to much about every little thing. I am about 5 1/2 weeks. Thanks!
