Napping in the crib

For those of you that have LO's that nap in their crib how did you get them do it. Do you wait until they are asleep elsewhere and then put them in the crib? Put them in the crib when they start to seem tired? How? I want to try to get DS to nap in the crib but he usually doesn't fall asleep in my arms so if I try to put him in the crib when he is starting to show sleep cues he just is awake again and wont fall asleep. How did you get them to transition?

 DS does sleep in his crib at night but generally falls asleep while eating and rocking and then stays asleep when he is put in the crib for the night.
