Babies and smelling

Can babies smell much at this point? Do you think a smell could cause them to have a screaming fit?

I had to leave my parents house because LO just out of the blue started screaming out of control. I checked all the usual things, even took off her jacket in case she was just warm. For 10 minutes she was like this until she zonked out in the car. 5 minutes beforeahe had her fit my idiot mother decided to stimulate her smelling sense by putting some gummy candies in front of her nose. Do you think that could be what it was? I know it's a stupid question, but curious to know if that is something you have experience with. Needless to say I was a little irritated with my mom for not asking first and then when she was crying she kept nagging saying "let me calm her down"
