Need opinions on Halloween costume

I've been working on DD's costume for over a month - she asked to be a snail, so I found a tutorial to make a snail costume.  It's been a tremendous undertaking (sculpting, papier mache, painting, etc).  We were supposed to take DD and DS for their Halloween pics tomorrow.  I cancelled the appointment because DH thinks that my costume is a big fail.  So here's the original tutorial I followed:

Does this look *anything* like a snail to you?  If DD was dressed in brown pants, a long-sleeved brown shirt, and had a headband with tentacles on it, would you have any idea that she was a snail? Does the color look right to you?  Is there anything I could do to make it look more obviously snail-like?  I'm so downtrodden about this whole costume-making experience.
