Is She Sleeping Or Not? I Can't Tell

Before DD really wakes up in the morning, she has this strange time for about a 20 mins or so where she will sort of cry with her eyes closed.  She will do the beginning sounds of crying then stop, then start up again then stop... But all of this is with her eyes closed.  It's the only time of day when she does this.  The pauses inbetween are for about 5-10 seconds, followed by 5-10 seconds of this "crying".  Does anyone else's LO do this?  If so, what do you make of it?  Do you get them up, or just wait and see if they wake up on their own?
