gas drops

Ok stupid question....when are you supposed to use gas drops. I am confused as to when I should give them to DS. He farts a lot and I am not sure if I am suppose to give him the drops if he is farting a lot or if he seems to be straining and can't get the gas out. Please educate me about gas drops...I feel so stupid.
