Benadryl for Allergies?

New to this and can't find much information online. I have severe allergies and they've been acting up a lot the last few weeks. My doctor gave me a "list" of medicines that were OK- benadryl was on the list of being OK after the first trimester.

 A gal I know went with different doctors, through a different hospital and the list she was provided with said benadryl is OK at any time.

 I called this morning to let DR know that the benadryl hadn't been helping and wanted to see if I could up the dosage-- the nurse told me to stop taking the benadryl as it is unsafe in the 1st trimester. 

Is this doctor preference or what?? I'm very confused.
