How Many Weeks am I Really?

It's kind of annoying, my doctor says I am six weeks and then tells me that my HCG is low for 6 weeks...I swear I am more like 5 and a couple of days.  When does that become a little more obvious?  Or will the OBGYN always go by the first day of your last period?
