Trying to understand

I had an u/s last Friday at (what I thought was 7w1d). There was a gestational sac, yolk sac, and what the doctor thought was a fetal pole but there was no heartbeat. He asked me to come back today (8 weeks). This time there was a little "tadpole", but still no heartbeat. He gave me the option of miscarrying naturally of a D&C...I opted for miscarrying naturally. My question.....why is it still growing if it never had a heartbeat to begin with?
