Went in for my first appointment thinking I was 11 weeks...ended up being only 8 weeks!

I'm totally excited to have seen the heartbeat, but pretty thrown off to realize I wasn't as far along as I had thought. Has this happened to you? I apparently ovulated very late? I was basing things off my last period, and according to that I would have been 11 weeks, but according to the ultrasound baby is 8 weeks. I have heard that seeing the heartbeat can lesson the chances of miscarriage. Is this true for just seeing it. She didn't have the volume on so I didn't hear anything. She also didn't measure the BPM, unless she did and didn't tell us. She said everything looked good though, and my lab work was good, did pap, etc. What do people have to say to all this?
