So talk to me about the joys of being a homeowner

FI thinks we could become first time homeowners, citing our excellent credit scores, two well-paying jobs, and the fact that we have a history of being responsible (car payments, paying off personal loans, etc.) I'm a little leary. I like renting, it's easy and we only pay for our electric (utility-wise) right now. But if we bought a place, all the extra money we have would go directly to insurance and other utilities.

So tell me about how wonderful it is owning your own home. Does it beat renting?
