Making your own hanging wall letters?

DISCLAIMER: I am SO not crafty. Seriously.

However, these wall hanging letters are so cute, but really expensive! I saw you can get them plain at Jo-Ann, Michaels, etc. and paint them yourself. Has anyone done this? What kind of paint do you get? Do they have special stuff? lol this is embarrassing, but i would really like to do this for my little girl's room.

Any help is appreciated, as always
