To charge or not to charge...

If you had (or have attended) a baby shower in a restaurant, did you charge guests for their plates?

I don't like the idea of charging people when they're already spending money on a gift, but I also don't expect the hosts (friends and/or family) to pay for everyone's plate. Unfortunately, I don't have a place where I can have the shower, so a restaurant is probably my only option. At this point, I'm not even sure I want a shower! This is so frustrating.
