Push Presents: Yea or Nay?

I live in an area of the country (and I guess in a social circle) where these are pretty common: after a woman gives birth, her partner "rewards" her with a very nice present, usually a piece of jewelry.

What do you think? Is this tacky? Do you expect a present? Should the baby be enough of a reward? Does a new mother deserve to be lavished with gifts?
