 Here's a real test for the hormones, I cry harder every time I read it.  I think this should be posted in every single shelter as a harsh reality check for what you're about to do by surrendering your dog.  As I watch mine rolling around playing on the floor with her toys, walking over to me every 5 minutes to give me a kiss, I couldn't imagine ever giving her up, I would rather die myself than to do that.
