Lifting heavy stuff

When do you need to really start watching carrying heavy stuff around? I was thinking about this as I was carrying my dog's 25 lb bag of food out to the car. I was wondering if perhaps I shouldn't have been carrying it. I wasn't straining so I think I was fine. 25 lbs isn't that heavy, but I think next time maybe I will get a cart.
