Fighting in front of the kids?

I read this blog this morning: http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/05/when-parents-fight/ I think it brings up an interesting topic. I didn't see my parents fight until I was a teenager and they're not yellers (I learned as an adult that they drove up to the Albertson's down the street to have it out in the car). DH's dad, however, had no problem screaming and punching holes in walls in front of his kids. Oddly enough, if this article suggested an in-between path, then I missed it somehow. What's everyone's opinion? I'm inclined not to argue in front of my children until they're older -- and do my best to never scream in front of them. The author of this blog worries that this teaches kids to be doormats. I am not a doormat and neither is my brother -- is this woman just naval-gazing or do you think she has a point?
