Sudden night waking/screaming?

My almost one year-old has been waking up for the past week in the middle of the night literally screaming - like ear-piercing, blood curdling screams like he's in pain or terrified, then remains awake crying/fussing for a while and can't seem to settle back down. I've taken him to the doctor and he's not sick, no ear infections or any teeth on the horizon. I was basically told, "It's probably just a phase and he'll grow out of it soon." Has anyone experienced anything similar? I need sleep!
