Is everyone buying multiple car seats?

I haven't needed to get a convertible yet but it is happening soon.  We are currently just moving our infant seat from car to car and my car is the only one with a base.  Is a convertible seat more complicated to install and that is why everyone is getting two?    here's my situation.. DH drops DD off at day care, DC takes the kids on trips so we leave the seat there and then I pick up DD from DC.  So If we didn't want to reinstall it from car to car, we would have to buy 3 and leave one at DC but I really don't wanna buy 3 seats.  I guess I'm just wondering if it is really that much of a hassle to move this type of seat from car to car.  What is everybody else doing?
