Early Intervention evaluation

At my LO 9 month check up I told my pedi I was concerned that he has never once babbled. He grunts and groans and screams and laughs but no ma ma or ba ba or sounds like that. She told me to call early intervention to get him evaluated for developmental delays but his appointment isnt until August. Anyone have a LO who got evaluated for speech delays? What does the evaluation consist of? I hope he is just a lazy talker but am curious about the whole process.
